Ilocos Sur is known to be rich in traditions, culture, literature, and its heritage sites which have been known around the globe which has to be preserved for the next generations. But, it has been observed that some children and teenagers don’t care already about these things in our locality for they are now living in the modern world. And so, the government of Ilocos Sur had the idea to highlight the rich traditions and cultures we have to attract local and tourists and also to remind children and teenagers that we have these kinds of traditions and culture in our province. They called it as the Kannawidan Ylocos Festival; it is also to the time to celebrate the separation between Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte last February 2, 1818.
During Kannawidan, activities are being done such as Kannawidan Trade Fair, Miss Saniata, and Sarzuela. There are also contests that are being conducted to showcase the hidden talents of Ilocanos. In Kannawidan Trade Fair, other neighboring provinces of Ilocos Sur showcase their One Town One Product(OTOP) for the consumers to but. Display of talents is also shown to promote Ilocano’s pride in Sarzuelas and other talent contests. Prestigious nights are also present as a proof that Ilocana beauty is like no other through the Saniata ti Ilocos Sur. The crowned Saniata ti Ilocos Sur will be the one to represent the province in the Bb. Pilipinas.
It is not only the Kannawidan Ylocos Festival that should be visited by the tourists for there are many other reasons why people come back in the province. There are these what we call heritage village filled with Hispanic designed antique houses along Crisologo Street and Sta. Maria’s church which are both in the UNESCO World Heritage List of Sites which is very prestigious award that a place may be granted.
Ilocos Sur is also the home of great personalities who made marks in our history. We have Diego Silang and Gabriela Silang known as the Joan of Arc of the Philippines who both led in a bloody revolt. Elpidio Quirino, a former President of our country. We also have Vicente Singson Encamancion who became one of the 7 wise men.
Tasty delicacies are also the reason why people must visit Ilocos Sur with its Vigan Empanada and Longganisa. Nutrition is also a must for the people of Sto. Domingo who created Squash Noodles, the world class taste of San Ildefonso’s Basi. People shall never forget also the sweetness of Sta. Maria’s Balicucha and delicious Sugpon’s Ube.
These things are proofs that Ilocos Sur is a must visit place in the world with its extraordinary traditions, cultures, festivals, delicacies, tourist spots and many more which will never be found in any other place. It is very true that it is more fun in the Philippines and much more fun in the Ilocos Sur!
